Comprehensive Eye Exam Q & A
What is a comprehensive eye exam?
During your comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Levy evaluates your eye health and vision and listens to your concerns.
The exam involves vision measurement exercises using lettered charts and other medical instruments that enable Dr. Levy to determine several factors, including your peripheral vision and how well you’re able to see objects close-up and far away.
Your comprehensive eye exam often includes a dilation exam that allows Dr. Levy to see inside and to the back of your eye to check for any signs of eye diseases and conditions that might impair your vision.
How often should I have a comprehensive eye exam?
Dr. Levy recommends comprehensive eye exams every one to two years. More frequent exams are recommended as you age, and monitor your condition if:
You have certain eye health conditions and existing problems with your vision
You wear contact lenses regularly to help ensure your corneas, the clear lenses covering your eyes, remain healthy and in good condition
Children should have their first eye exams within the first six months after birth since this is when certain eye complications may begin. Another exam is recommended by age 3, and again before they start first grade.
What are the benefits of a comprehensive eye exam?
A comprehensive eye exam from Dr. Levy helps to protect you against eye diseases and conditions that may lead to serious complications, including blindness, over time if left untreated.
Some eye diseases have few symptoms or no symptoms at all and can go unnoticed without an eye exam. A comprehensive eye exam helps Dr. Levy identify abnormalities and eye diseases and catch them early when they can be better treated.
An eye exam also helps Dr. Levy manage any pre-existing conditions you might have and improve your eye health.
What if my eye exam reveals I need corrective eyewear?
Dr. Levy determines your current eye health and vision needs. She is an expert in contact lens fittings and can fit contact lenses for all ages and needs, including astigmatism, keratoconus, and bifocal contact lenses.
Some chronic medical conditions may negatively impact your vision and exhibit signs in your eyes, even in the earliest stages of the disease. Medical conditions that may impact your vision include:
High cholesterol
Hypertension
Rheumatoid arthritis
Ankylosing spondylitis
Crohn’s disease
It’s important you stay up-to-date with your eye exams and be proactive with your eye health. To learn more, call Rhody Eye Care to schedule an appointment today.
